Detailed Range Safety Officer (RSO) Course Description
RSO’s (Range Safety Officers) keep the gun world going. They keep the competitions, training classes, exhibitions, and any event that uses guns safe. In many ways, that makes the RSO class the most important class.
The job of the RSO is to make sure everyone on each shooting lane and the entire range is conducting themselves in a safe manner as defined in the range’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). The SOP is a written document and is customized to each range. It is a joint project between the range ownership, management and a trained RSO. The document starts with the basic NRA SOP supplied in the course and is customized to reflect the characteristics and needs specific to that range. The comprehensive information supplied in the course is used as a reference as needed. The job of the RSO is to work with range ownership to create a safe and complete SOP and then monitor the operation of each shooting lane and the entire range to assure conformity. The RSO’s concern is not whether the shooters are hitting the target, but that everyone on the range is conducting themselves in a safe manner.
This class teaches you how to perform the job of a RSO.
