PTI Concealed Carry Shooting Skills (CCSS) Course Detailed Description
Almost all of the CCW classes available anywhere focus on the outstanding curriculum presented in the NRA’s Personal Protection series of courses. NRA’s courses are excellent and set the standard for the nation. However, courses alone will not develop the necessary shooting skills while under the stress of attack. Those skills, while taught in the classroom courses, must be developed over time through hundreds of repetitions while under stress. Repetition under stress develops muscle memory. Without muscle memory, studies have shown that what you do under stress degrades to your lowest level of incompetence. That’s not where you want to be if a bad actor puts you in a situation of imminent threat of serious injury or death where you must execute your skills flawlessly in minimal time
The following are the shooting requirements for a CCW in San Diego County. Take a close look at them.
3 yds – 3rounds strong hand 6 seconds, 2 rounds support hand 8 seconds
5 yds – 5 rounds two handed 15 seconds
7yds – 5 rounds two handed, 20 seconds
If it takes you 6 seconds to stop an imminent threat of serious injury or death only 3 yards away, you’re either seriously injured or dead. A bad actor running towards you can cover 7 yards in less than 2.1 seconds. And if you shoot and miss, that might mean a dead bystander. Do you want to be put in that position by a bad actor who is looking for the opportunity to take advantage of you when you least expect it? This course addresses that problem.
This course refines the shooting skills you learned in the Personal Protection courses. You will practice shooting from the sitting, kneeling and standing positions. Shooting from cover and concealment is refined and practiced. Drawing from a holster, a skill you learned in the Personal Protection Outside the Home course is refined.
The student should bring the following items to the class:
- The handgun the student intends to carry. Revolvers are not recommended but if that is what you intend to carry, bring at least two reloaders.
- A minimum of 350 rounds of ammunition. I suggest you bring extra ammunition.
- A minimum of 2 magazines. More is better and will reduce the need to constantly reload magazines.
- A holster that completely covers the trigger guard and will securely retain your gun when turned upside down and lightly shaken. All holsters will be worn in the 3:00 or 9:00 positions. Appendix carry holsters are not allowed for safety reasons.
- Eye and active ear protection. Hearing protection must be active so range commands can be clearly heard during the firing drills.
- Knee pads are recommended.
- Additional magazines and reloaders are recommended.
This is an advanced level shooting class. Completion of the CRPA/NRA Personal Protection In the Home and Outside the Home are prerequisites for acceptance in this class.
